Universities teaching Communication Technology are certain to benefit from applications of the BSC-M Model, for the first time facilitating the evaluation of transmission procedures and codes. This book is also written for those interested in in development and testing of link control protocols and error protection schemes for communication systems. The content is thereby intended to offer a full set of calculations of error structures occurring within binary channels with memory (BSC-M). For this purpose it is not necessary to measure error structures. The model contains only two parameters, the bundling factor and the bit error rate, whereby the most diverse range of channels can be presented, derived from empirical readings conducted over twenty-three years, It have been verified by different Authors, as well as by measurements over cable and also over maritime radio up to distances of 7,500 km (short-wave).

Claus Wilhelm (Doctor of Technical Sciences) was born in Glaubitz in Saxony, Germany. He graduated in 1960 from the Engineering College in Mittweida with a degree in communications engineering. In 1970 Dr Wilhelm received a postgraduate degree in High Frequency Technology at the Technical University of Dresden followed by another engineering degree - in information transfer - in 1973. He received a lectureship in 1987 at the Friedrich Liszt School of Transportation in Dresden and obtained his doctorate in technical sciences in the field of information technology in 1989. Over a period of thirty years, from 1961 to 1990, Dr Wilhelm worked in the development and testing of new telecommunications technologies. One area of specialization was the mathematical description of the characteristics of telecommunication cables from measurement by approximation of the frequency-dependent quadrupole parameters. He initiated the development of a measuring device for error structures in digital binary channels and for many years conducted research on their description through channel models. As editor of the book Data Transmission (Berlin 1976), Claus Wilhelm was also author of several of the books chapters. In the field of telecommunication network planning, Dr Wilhelm specifically developed a calculation method for overflow systems, called the QBM source bundling method, used to optimize network routing.
