在整體思路和理論建構方面，作者選用和建立了一個較為合理的理論框架，用於觀察、描述和解釋英漢多項前置修飾語的基本排序模式及其異同。　 語序是語言表義的一個重要手段。當一個名詞短語中的名詞中心語受多個前置修飾語修飾時，這幾個前置修飾語之間的相對位置次序雖然有時似乎具有一定的靈活性，但在大多數情況下卻較為固定，呈現出一定的規律性。有時，位置的不同可能帶來意義上的不同。例如，Quirk et al（1985：1341）指出，在英語中，diny English books是指弄臟的英語書，而English dirty books更有可能指的是英語淫穢書籍。　　那麼，在英漢兩種語言中，多項前置修飾語的慣用句法位置次序究竟有哪些相似和不同之處？次序的異同表達了哪些語義和語用功能？其背后的認知理據又是什麼？這些都是值得深入探討的問題，毛薇博士在《英漢多項前置修飾語次序的認知功能探索》中所要研究的正是這些問題。在總結和歸納前人研究的基礎上，作者通過對自己收集的大量帶有多項前置修飾語的英漢描述性名詞短語實例語料的分析，從認知功能的角度深入分析和研究了多項前置修飾語排序的認知過程和一般排序原則。 毛薇（1977—），文學博士，同濟大學外國語學院講師。2000—2006年在上海外國語大學學習，獲英語語言文學碩士學位和外國語言學及應用語言學博士學位，已在《解放軍外國語學院學報》、《西安外國語大學學報》等刊物上發表論文數篇。
