綜合外媒報導，近期在亞洲爆發一種名為立百病毒的傳染病毒，它具有強烈抗生素抗藥性，雖然初期還有辦法使用抗生素去治療，但到病毒針對治療用抗生素產生抗藥性前，人們可以研發有效替代品的時間所剩無幾。

什麼是「立百病毒」？根據《衛報》報導，立百病毒會導致嚴重的呼吸系統問題跟引起腦炎，使得大腦腫脹，死亡率介於40%至75%之間，具體數字取決於該疾病所爆發的地點；立百病毒的宿主為蝙蝠，先前該種病毒曾經在孟加拉和印度爆發過，原因可能與飲用的椰棗汁有關。

萊爾表示，立百病毒的抗生素抗藥性（帶有抗藥性的超級細菌出現，有部份的原因由於低收入國家缺乏抗生素所造成的）帶來嚴重的風險，就抗菌素耐藥性（AMR）而言，仍然可以使用抗生素去抵禦立百病毒，但是在病毒對治療用抗生素出現抗藥性之前，能夠研發替代品的時間已經不多；立百病毒的大流行不僅是無法想像的，還是不可避免的，除非製藥業認真致力於開發替代抗生素。

《衛報》報導指出，總部設在荷蘭的非營利組織「藥品可及性基金會」（AccesstoMedicineFoundation），近期發布獨立報告，此報告指出，全球各大製藥公司，雖然集中研發新冠病毒治療藥品，但對於下一場疾病大流行卻幾乎沒有準備。

根據藥品可及性基金會的近期報告指出，在世界衛生組織（WHO）點名的16種最大公共衛生風險中，全球各大藥廠對「立百病毒」（Nipahvirus）等10種傳染病沒有因應計畫，製藥廠沒有研發出任何藥物，可以治療立百病毒、撒哈拉以南非洲的「裂谷熱」、MERS、SARS等。
