BorninBuda(nowBudapest),HungaryonJuly1st,1818,IgnazSemmelweiswentontoobtainadoctoratefromtheUniversityofViennaandmaster’sdegreeinmidwifery.WhenhebeganhistenureattheViennaGeneralHospitalinthemid19thcentury,amysteriousandpoorlyunderstoodinfectionknownas“childbedfever”wasleadingtohighmortalityratesinnewmothersinmaternitywardsacrossEurope.
